Acts on Discrimination


Voting Rights Act

-singed by Lyndon B. Johnson on August 5, 1965.

-Banned discrimination in voting practices that were adopted in the south.


Fair housing act-

-passed in 19678, shortly after Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated

-prevents landlord discrimination

-makes it unlawful to refuse to sell, rent, or negotiate with any person due to their race.

-the seven protected classes are; Race, Color, Religion, Sex, Handicap, Familial Status, national origin.


Civil Rights Era


Bull Connor-

-Southern democrat and politician born and raised in Alabama.

-Part of the group that walked out of the 1948 convention in protest of civil rights movements.

-There are several allegations that say that Connor was part of a plan to murder an influential Civil Rights leader.

-Everyone wanted him removed from office but he overruled them.

-Eventually he finally was removed from office and later died of a stroke.


Medgar Evers Assassination-

-He was a African American Civil rights leader.

-He was a perfect example of a good man, he graduated from college.

-World War 11 Veteran. Shot to death by a white supremacist and Klansman on June 12th, 1963 in his own driveway.

-The killer was Byron De La Beckwith.
